Filling the Gaps: Environmental, Habitation and Cultural Changes in Prehistoric Aegean Thrace
GAPS
GAPS is an interdisciplinary research project investigating prehistoric settlement patterns in Aegean Thrace during the Neolithic and the Bronze Age. By combining archaeology, geophysics, geology and advanced digital methodologies, the project aims to understand long-term environmental change and its impact on human habitation.

Research in Aegean Thrace, powered by digital methods
Fieldwork, laboratory analyses, and integrated spatial modelling — with outputs designed for both scientific use and public dissemination.
Archaeological Survey
Systematic surface survey and documentation of settlement extent, density and chronology.
Geophysics & Remote Sensing
Non-invasive mapping (magnetometry, GPR) to reveal subsurface architecture and features.
Palaeoenvironment & Dating
Borehole cores and laboratory analyses supporting environmental reconstruction and radiocarbon dating.
GIS, AI & 3D Outputs
Digital recording, spatial modelling, and visual outputs (maps, 3D models, media archives).
Core objectives
GAPS aims to explain long-term changes in habitation by connecting settlement evidence with environmental reconstruction and integrated digital analysis.
-
✓Habitation gaps & re-occupationIdentify and interpret phases of abandonment and return.
-
✓Palaeoenvironmental reconstructionTrace environmental change and its local impact on settlement decisions.
-
✓Digital fieldwork innovationUse mobile recording, UAV imagery and AI-enhanced workflows.
-
✓Digital outputs & disseminationPublish maps, 3D models, media archives and updates for wider audiences.
Follow fieldwork & research outputs
We publish regular updates, media and project outputs throughout the project duration.
